A Not-So-Typical Date Night

Last night, I went out on a date with someone that wasn't my husband.

It was a Thursday night that started off a little hot and humid but ended cool and breezy. I drove over to my date's house, had a little chat and then on we went to the venue of our special night. We shared some movie nachos, a small drink, and a bag of chocolate covered raisins. I laughed and truly enjoyed myself. Needless to say, I had fun fun fun!

Well, here is the real story. My sister's friend hooked my youngest sister and me up with tickets to a special, private screening of the movie Bridesmaids, which was held at the Loews Theatres (coughghettocough) at The Fountains in Stafford. Sure, it was in the middle-ish of the week (kinda) and it wasn't some Hollywood premiere type of thing, but she and I dressed properly for date night anyways (I don't get out much, thanks Baby Boy) complete with makeup and 4-inch pumps. When we got to the theatres, we were instructed to completely shut down our cell phones and return any cameras to our vehicle, as they were not permitted inside the screening. We came 40 minutes early, but I supposed that wasn't early enough. The only seats left available to "non-VIP" guests (whatever) that didn't come two hours early were the front five rows. So basically we watched the pores and hair follicles of the actors right before our very eyes. My neck and back are now suffering from the debilitating effects of an up-close-and-personal screening, but nevertheless, I enjoyed the FREE screening.

What were we talking about? Ah, yes, the movie. From the get-go, the movie had the audience hooked and cracking up. The plot is quite hackneyed and predictable, but the charm of the movie lies in its characters and their quirks and life problems. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph have an obvious chemistry that makes their life-long friendship believable, and the outstanding support cast of Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey (of Reno 911 fame), and Melissa McCarthy, among others, made the movie much more than just a chick-flick with a box of tissues.

There is a little something for the guys too, aside from the hotness that is Rose Byrne. The raunchiness of the bridesmaids' fitting scene made everyone groan, while Kristen Wiig's performance as a fed-up maid of honor reminds us why she is in SNL in the first place. And everyone can't help but feel for her character when she gets upstaged time and time again.

Below is the trailer for the movie Bridesmaids.

The film is rated-R for sexual content and strong language, and comes out to the general public on Friday, May 13. It stars SNL commediennes Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, and is directed by Paul Feig (of Freaks and Geeks semi-fame).

I give the film **** (4/5) stars for making a great comedic farce out of the mindf--- that is wedding planning and friendships between women. I also had to give it two big-toes up for the "name-dropping" segment in which the women spazz out over a fictional French couture line with a very bizzare name (you'll get it when you see it). It is a great date film, a film to see with your girlfriends or even your sister (like I did!). I would like to again thank my sister Cathrine and her friend Caroline for hooking it up at the movies!

Such a fun movie! I think I'll have to watch it again. "I'm trying to look like a penis but I have elbows." =)
